  • description: One of the undisputed highlights of my trip so far has been in the first port of call in Tonga has been getting into the water at Pangaimotu Island, just off the coast of Nukuʻalofa, the capital and largest city of the Kingdom of Tonga. With added bonus of being the first time I could test the newest addition to my travelling camera addition I am so delighted with it I wanted to share a quick update about that, along with a short video of me exploring a submerged shipwreck I filmed while I there. My new underwater camera is the DJI Osmo Action 6. I decided it was time for an upgrade after my recent Regent Seven Seas Splendor Caribbean cruise, when I was still using my probably decade-old GoPro. It’s served me incredibly well over the years, but it had become very clear that it was now seriously dated — especially as it only shoots in 1080p, which really doesn’t do places like this justice anymore and as I now post 4K videos now that well over half of views on YouTube of my videos is on the TV. DJI’s latest Osmo Action, has absolutely blown me away. Hopefully you agree after watching this short minute long edit. The short video shows me snorkelling around the submerged shipwreck just off Pangaimotu Island, and the experience itself was incredible — but what really surprised me was just how good the footage looks. The clarity, colour, stabilisation and overall sharpness are on a completely different level to what I was getting before. Even straight out of the camera, the water looks vibrant, clear and natural, and the movement is beautifully smooth. Banned in the USA? What’s also interesting is that while this is DJI’s latest version, it currently doesn’t seem to be available in the USA. The DJI, along with another Chinese drone maker, is under regulatory review there, and their products may potentially face restrictions or bans from 23 December this year! Everyone is eagerly awaiting the final ruling which is now looming fast. And finally — I just have to say how impressed I am with Tonga. The water here is stunningly clear, the marine life is abundant, and Pangaimotu Island was beautiful, although it was hot badly by a Tsumani in 2023 which destroyed a small resort on the island which has not been rebuilt.
